Gloucester 23-5 Bath, Kingsholm Stadium
Gloucester Rugby overcame three yellow cards and sustained pressure from Bath to secure a hard-fought 23-5 victory in the Gallagher PREM West Country derby at a sold-out Kingsholm Stadium.
The Cherry & Whites limited their rivals to a single try as Freddie Thomas and Max Llewellyn crossed in the second half. George Barton contributed 13 points with the boot and was named Player of the Match.
Gloucester Survive Early Bath Pressure
Gloucester controlled much of the opening 15 minutes but were unable to turn their territorial advantage into points.
Bath then began to take control and thought they had scored through Kepu Tuipulotu, only for the try to be ruled out for a double movement.
The visitors continued to apply pressure, forcing repeated Gloucester infringements near the try-line. Ollie Thorley was shown a yellow card in the 21st minute before Ciaran Knight was also sent to the sin bin seven minutes later, reducing the hosts to 13 players.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, Gloucester produced an important defensive stand. Barton won a turnover penalty close to his own line, allowing the Cherry & Whites to clear the danger.
Barton Gives Gloucester Half-Time Lead
Having survived Bath's sustained pressure, Gloucester began to make progress at the other end, despite still being short of players.
Barton opened the scoring with a penalty in the 31st minute before adding another five minutes later after Finn Russell was penalised for a high tackle on Charlie Atkinson.
The Gloucester full-back then landed a third penalty from long range in the 38th minute to extend the hosts' advantage to 9-0.
The three successful kicks highlighted Gloucester's ability to capitalise on their opportunities, even while Bath enjoyed extended periods of attacking pressure.
Bath finally broke through on the stroke of half-time when Tuipulotu finished a driving maul from close range. Russell missed the conversion, leaving Gloucester 9-5 ahead at the interval.
Thomas Extends Gloucester Advantage
Bath resumed their attacking pressure after the restart, and Gloucester suffered another setback when Will Joseph was shown a yellow card in the 46th minute for a deliberate knock-on.
The visitors kicked to the corner but again failed to turn their numerical advantage into points as Gloucester defended their line and eventually forced a penalty.
The home side then produced a crucial attacking response despite being a player short. Barton kicked a penalty into the corner, allowing Gloucester to establish a driving maul deep inside Bath territory.
As the ball moved wider, Jack Clement produced an excellent offload to release. Thomas, who powered over for Gloucester's opening try in the 54th minute.
Barton converted to extend the lead to 16-5, giving the hosts an important advantage after another spell of defensive pressure.
Llewellyn Seals Memorable Derby Win
Bath continued to search for a way back into the contest, but Gloucester's defence remained organised and determined despite the high penalty count.
The decisive final score came in the 78th minute. Morgan broke through the Bath defence and carried the ball close to the line before Charlie Atkinson found Max Llewellyn, who powered through a tackle to score.
Barton added the conversion to complete Gloucester's 23-5 victory and finish with a perfect record of three penalties and two conversions.
