Leicester Tigers back row Gareth Evans has announced his retirement from professional rugby with immediate effect.

Evans started his career with Gloucester Rugby in 2011 after graduating from their academy programme and was part of the squad that went on to win 2013 Premiership Rugby Sevens and 2014/15 European Challenge Cup. He also had a loan stint with Hartpury College during his time with the Cherry and Whites.

The 30-year-old made a switch to Ospreys in 2019 and joined Leicester Tigers on a short-term deal ahead of the 2021/22 season. He has now decided to quit the game on medical grounds.

"I want to thank everyone who has played a part in my rugby journey, from the days of running around as a kid to now at Leicester Tigers," he told in a statement released.

“It has been a short but awesome stay at this club and I am proud to have been involved with Tigers, as well as great clubs like Gloucester and Ospreys during my career.

“To my coaches, team-mates, the supporters, my friends and family, thank you for your support.

“I am excited for what comes next and looking forward to exploring the real world.

“Finally, to my wife Antonia, I am so grateful for all your support and looking forward to our next chapter as a family.”
