Ulster Rugby have confirmed that veteran scrum-half John Cooney will leave the province at the end of the current season.
His departure marks the conclusion of a remarkable era, with Cooney having played a crucial role in Ulster’s success over the past eight years.
Since joining Ulster in 2017, Cooney has been one of the most influential figures in the squad. His exceptional performances have earned him selection in the BKT United Rugby Championship Dream Team five times.
In 2020, he was also shortlisted for the EPCR European Player of the Year award, highlighting his impact on both domestic and European competitions.
Cooney's contributions to Ulster have not gone unnoticed. He has twice been named Ulster’s Player of the Year, a testament to his consistency and influence on the pitch.
Additionally, he has won the Supporters’ Club Player of the Year award three times, underscoring his popularity among fans. His ability to control the game from the scrum-half position and his reliability in key moments have cemented his legacy as one of the club’s standout performers.
