Australia international James Horwill has been confirmed as the captain of Harlequins for the 2017/18 season.

Horwill will take over the reins from Danny Care after signing a new contract that will keep him committed to the Aviva Premiership side until 2020.

The 32-year-old joined Quins from Queensland Reds in 2015 and has made 40 appearances until now in which he has scored five tries.

Horwill, who made his Australia debut in 2006, captained them in the 2011 World Cup and also led them in the 2013 series against British and Irish Lions and his last appearances for the Wallabies came during the home Test series against England, which his team lost 0-3.

"I'm very humbled and honoured to be asked to captain such a great club. It's certainly something that I won't be taking lightly," said Horwill.

"The hard work for us as a squad starts now and we want to make Harlequins as successful as it can be.

"The exciting thing is we haven't reached our potential. We have played well in parts, but we have more to give, both in an individual capacity and as a group."
