Bristol Bears 14-18 Harlequins, Principality Stadium

Harlequins secured a hard-fought 18-14 victory over Bristol Bears at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Saturday.

In a tight contest with few easy scoring chances, Quins handled the big moments better and came away with an important win.

The result was shaped by Alex Dombrandt’s influence at both ends of the field, with the Quins captain scoring a try, preventing another and winning the late turnover that set up the decisive penalty.

Fast Start But Bristol Strike First

Harlequins thought they had made the perfect start when Dombrandt appeared to score inside the opening two minutes, but the try was ruled out for an infringement in the build-up.

Bristol then made their own early pressure count. After building phases close to the Quins line, Fitz Harding forced his way over from short range to give the Bears a 7-0 lead inside the opening ten minutes.

Quins responded midway through the first half. After sustained pressure from the forwards near the Bristol line, Dombrandt finally got over to score and reduce the gap to 7-5.

The remainder of the first half became a tense and physical battle. Bristol repeatedly pushed into the Quins 22, but Harlequins stood firm with key defensive contributions from Dombrandt and Guido Petti Pagadizábal, both of whom came up with important turnovers to keep the Bears out.

Quins Move Ahead After Halftime

The second half remained close, but Quins edged in front when Jarrod Evans kicked a penalty to make it 8-7.

A crucial moment soon followed when Bristol looked set to regain the lead, only for Dombrandt to hold the ball up over the line and deny the Bears a try. It was a major defensive intervention that kept Harlequins in front at a key stage of the match.

On the hour mark, Quins found their second try. Rodrigo Isgró ran a sharp arcing line, broke through and finished under the posts to stretch the lead to 15-7.

Late Bristol Fightback Falls Short

Bristol refused to go away and set up a tense finish when Steven Luatua burrowed over with five minutes remaining to bring the score back to 15-14.

With the Bears pressing and the match still in the balance, Harlequins needed one final big moment. It came from their captain. Dombrandt forced a turnover around 35 metres out, giving Quins field position and a chance to close the game.

Jamie Benson then stepped up calmly and slotted the penalty to seal an 18-14 victory.
