Wales captain Dewi Lake's participation in the 2024 Six Nations is in jeopardy following surgery on a biceps injury sustained during an Ospreys training session before Christmas.
The 25-year-old hooker could be sidelined for up to 12 weeks, potentially ruling him out of the entire tournament.
Ospreys head coach Mark Jones provided an update on Lake’s condition, indicating that while 12 weeks is the upper estimate for recovery, there is optimism for an earlier return.
“I think about 12 weeks was the high end of it,” said Jones.
“Knowing Dewi, and looking at the quality of the rehabilitation that’s out there now, all we know is the operation went well and there’s nothing to suggest he can’t beat that target. Dewi’s got an awesome mindset, he’s a great professional.”
Lake’s potential availability for Wales’ final Six Nations match against England on March 15 in Cardiff remains uncertain, but his rehabilitation progress will be closely monitored.
Warren Gatland’s side, currently on a troubling run of 12 consecutive defeats, face added pressure in the hooker position ahead of their campaign opener against France in Paris on January 31.
Ryan Elias, also sidelined with a neck injury, is targeting a mid-January return according to Scarlets head coach Dwayne Peel. Meanwhile, Dragons hooker Elliot Dee has recently rejoined action following an ankle problem.
Lake, who is also a contender for British & Irish Lions selection, has been a key figure for Wales. His absence would be a significant blow as the team looks to regain form in the highly competitive Six Nations tournament.
