Wales head coach Warren Gatland has expressed his willingness to step aside if is best for Welsh rugby, as questions over his future mount following a 52-20 defeat to Australia.
Gatland's position is under serious threat after Wales slumped to an 11th successive Test defeat on Sunday against the Wallabies. The loss meant this is Wales' worst run in their 143-year rugby history.
The last thing Gatland needs is the visit of back-to-back world champions South Africa this weekend but speaking after their recent meeting with Australia, the Wales boss revealed he had had discussions with Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) executive director Nigel Walker and chair Richard Collier-Keywood in the changing room.
While he declined to disclose specifics, Gatland admitted he was uncertain about his role heading into this Saturday's clash with the Springboks although reports suggest he will be in charge in Cardiff.
“Whatever the best decision for Welsh rugby is, I am more than comfortable with that,” Gatland stated. “Whether that’s making a change to bring positivity back into the game, I would support it 100 per cent.”
Since returning for his second stint as head coach, Gatland has overseen just six wins in 23 Tests, with Wales enduring a string of defeats that has shaken confidence in the team’s direction.
Wales' players looked visibly devasted following their defeat to Australia and any decision around Gatland's future is more likely to happen in the new year.
When asked if he still had the determination to continue, Gatland responded: “Absolutely. I do it because I love being involved in the game. I have so many good memories of my time in Wales.”
He acknowledged the difficulty of the current situation, adding: “It’s challenging at the moment. I am only human, so I ask myself if it’s the right thing to do. But I am happy doing it. I love being involved in the game, and I love what I do.”
Gatland emphasised his commitment to the sport’s future in Wales, stating: “What I care about massively is Welsh rugby, the people, and the friends I’ve made. The future of the game matters most.”
Gatland reportedly gave his players Monday and Tuesday off to reset and refocus ahead of Saturday's meeting with South Africa.
Wales were second best against Australia last week and were picked apart by the Wallabies, something the world champions would show no mercy in repeating.
According to the bookmakers, Wales are a staggering 20/1 to win at the Principality on Saturday - which in some cases - is the same value as a draw.
In terms of early teams news from a Wales perspective, lock Adam Beard won’t face South Africa due to a knee injury.
