Wales have been dealt a significant blow ahead of their Six Nations campaign as key lock Adam Beard is expected to miss the tournament’s opener against France in Paris on January 31.
The 28-year-old sustained a knee injury during Wales’ defeat to Australia, with Ospreys head coach Toby Booth confirming the long-term nature of the issue.
"The big downer is Adam Beard's injury which is going to be a long-term one," Booth said. "It'll be at least three months."
Beard’s absence not only impacts Wales but also leaves a gap for the Ospreys during their Challenge Cup campaign and Christmas derbies.
The seasoned lock, who is anticipated to join French club Montpellier next season, is an integral part of Warren Gatland’s plans.
In a positive development, Ospreys second-row James Fender has returned to action following months on the sidelines with an arm injury. Fender recently featured in a development match against Dragons A and is considered one of the rising stars in Welsh rugby.
"We need to be mindful of injuries," Booth said regarding Fender’s return.
"He's a physical specimen who can impose himself both in a set-piece point of view but certainly defensively. Getting him back... will make us a better team."
Wales’ campaign begins in Paris against a formidable French side, and the loss of Beard will undoubtedly test Gatland’s depth in the second row.
