Warren Gatland will continue as Wales' head coach for the 2025 Six Nations campaign, despite the team's ongoing struggles, including a historic 12-match losing streak.

The announcement comes as the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) acknowledged the need for immediate improvement in the national team’s performance.

Wales’ poor form in 2024, which left them winless in Test matches and ranked 11th globally, placed Gatland under immense pressure.

The WRU undertook a comprehensive review following defeats to Fiji, Australia, and South Africa in the Autumn Nations Series. WRU chief executive Abi Tierney admitted that a change in leadership was considered during the review process.

Gatland, who returned for his second stint as head coach in December 2022, has overseen 18 Tests, resulting in just six wins.

Despite the dismal record, Tierney expressed confidence in Gatland's ability to rise to the challenge, stating: "Warren knows the security of his position is directly related to team performance. We believe he is equal to the tough challenge ahead."

The WRU announced plans to establish a high-performance advisory panel, including former senior players, to assist in revamping the team’s approach.

However, the organization faced internal changes, with Nigel Walker resigning from his role as executive director of rugby. Walker acknowledged accountability for the team’s on-field struggles, stating, "It's right I'm judged on performances on the pitch."

Gatland, who is contracted until the 2027 Rugby World Cup, welcomed the scrutiny and emphasized his commitment to improving the team’s fortunes. Reflecting on his task ahead, the 61-year-old said: "This group of players has immense potential, and we will work incredibly hard to turn around our fortunes. Success and winning will be our focus in 2025."
