Ireland hooker Dan Sheehan has stressed the importance of "knuckling down to basics" as his team continues their Six Nations title charge against Wales in Cardiff on Saturday.

Heading into the match as overwhelming favorites, Ireland have the opportunity to claim the Triple Crown with a victory, having already secured wins over England and Scotland.

Meanwhile, Wales find themselves in a difficult period, suffering 14 consecutive Test defeats since the 2023 World Cup. The team has also undergone a coaching change, with Matt Sherratt stepping in as interim head coach following Warren Gatland’s departure.

Despite the contrasting form of both teams, Sheehan expects a tough challenge at the Principality Stadium and is prepared for an intense physical contest.

Acknowledging the passionate nature of Welsh rugby, Sheehan emphasized that his side must maintain focus and intensity.

"Obviously, they have been on a losing run of late, but they are a passionate nation.

"We only got here yesterday, and it's everywhere. Everyone is still really behind the team, and they are a real passionate bunch of people."

He highlighted the need for Ireland to match Wales’ physicality from the start, expecting their opponents to adopt an aggressive approach.

"Probably their game-plan is to come and try to physically dominate. We’ve been talking about that all week where we need to make sure we come out with proper intent, and from the first whistle that we are lashing into them."

With regular captain Caelan Doris sidelined due to injury, Sheehan will take on the leadership role, becoming the 111th player to captain Ireland’s men’s team.

While leading the squad in Cardiff presents a significant challenge, Sheehan remains focused on controlling the game and executing Ireland’s game plan effectively.

"We have talked a small bit about how Cardiff play, which is a lovely attacking style of rugby with great flow, but we just need to focus on what we can control."
