The Crusaders have locked in the future of one of their brightest prospects, Taha Kemara, by extending his contract through to the end of the 2028 Super Rugby Pacific season.
The announcement comes even as the 22-year-old playmaker faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to a serious knee injury.
Kemara, who made his Super Rugby debut in 2023, has quickly become a fan favourite with his composed performances and growing leadership role within the squad. Reflecting on his decision to stay, Kemara said,
"I want to stay at this club because it represents me as a person, and it feels like home now.
"The boys, the fans, and the community — everything just aligns, so it was a no-brainer for me to stick around long-term. I just love this club, and I love this city as well."
The Crusaders' head coach was full of praise for Kemara's rise and commitment.
"His undoubted potential has begun to be realised this season, with plenty of growth left as he gains more experience.
"Taha has matured into a fine leader and game driver who has earned the trust of the whole organisation. We are excited to be a part of Taha’s future."
The good news was tempered by confirmation that Kemara has suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee. The injury occurred during a recent clash with the Highlanders and will rule him out for the remainder of the 2025 season.
In light of the injury, Kemara expressed gratitude for the support he’s received.
"When you get a long-term injury, your thoughts go to the security of yourself and your family, but the management have been awesome in terms of reassuring me that I'm going to be in their plans for the long term.
"That made me feel so much better, coming off the field knowing they've got my back no matter what."
The coaching staff echoed their support and confidence in his recovery.
"We are obviously hurting for Taha and his family, but he is a young man with an incredible drive and work ethic. His resilience is admirable, and he will work really hard to get back on that pitch in a better place than he was before; that's just who he is."
The Crusaders expect Kemara to return to full fitness near the beginning of the 2026 season.
