Blues 47-40 Highlanders, Eden Park, Auckland

The Blues survived a furious late comeback from the Highlanders to claim a 47-40 victory at Eden Park and retain the Gordon Hunter Memorial Trophy.

In a match full of momentum swings, attacking ambition and late drama, the home side looked to have done enough long before the final minutes, only for the Highlanders to storm back and threaten to force extra time before a costly late error ended their hopes.

The win kept the Blues firmly in touch near the top of the Super Rugby Pacific table, but they were made to work much harder than expected after building a commanding second-half lead.

Highlanders Strike First But Blues Respond

The Highlanders made the perfect start when scrum-half Adam Lennox reacted quickly to loose ball and crossed in the third minute.

The Blues answered almost immediately through their forward pack, with Hoskins Sotutu scoring from close range before Anton Segner added another after a strong opening spell from the hosts.

The Blues continued to build pressure and extended their lead when Sam Darry crossed after 26 minutes. That try also marked a milestone for Beauden Barrett, whose conversion moved him past Morne Steyn into second place on Super Rugby’s all-time points list.

A major moment came late in the first half when Caleb Tangitau broke through and released Tanielu Tele’a with a superb long pass, but the play ended with Tangitau knocked unconscious in a collision with Zarn Sullivan. After review, Sullivan was shown a yellow card. The Blues held onto a 19-14 lead at halftime despite being under pressure.

Blues Build Big Second-Half Lead

The hosts came out strongly after the break. Bradley Slater finished from the back of a maul, and Segner added his second try after bursting through a gap to stretch the lead to 33-14 after 50 minutes.

The Highlanders responded through their scrum, forcing repeated penalties and regaining momentum. Lennox scored his second try after stepping through and finishing well to cut the gap.

But the Blues kept finding answers. Barrett helped create another opening for Cole Forbes, and later Ben Ake looked to have put the result beyond doubt when the home side again moved clear.

Highlanders Rally Falls Just Short

The closing stages turned wild. A loose Barrett pass gave the Highlanders a chance to counter from deep, and debutant Xavier Tito-Harris finished the move after an 80-metre break.

Then, with AJ Lam in the sin bin, the visitors surged again. Tele’a and hooker Soane Vikena both crossed in quick succession to slash the margin and bring the Highlanders within reach of a draw that could have taken the contest to Super Point.

Back-to-back penalties pushed the Highlanders deep into Blues territory, but just as the pressure peaked, a late knock-on ended the comeback and secured the win for the home side.
