Bath Rugby has announced updated plans for its new stadium at The Rec, following extensive feedback from the public, key stakeholders, and Bath and North East Somerset (BANES) Council.

The revisions aim to address concerns raised while maintaining the club's vision for a world-class facility.

The original proposals, submitted in 2023, sought to expand the ground's capacity from 14,500 to 18,000. While the initial plans received widespread support, some feedback highlighted concerns about potential impacts on the city’s iconic views, particularly from the East.

The updated plans, revealed on December 23, include notable changes, such as reducing the height of the West and East Stands to better integrate with Bath’s historic skyline.

Bath Rugby Chief Executive Tarquin McDonald emphasized the importance of balancing modern facilities with the city’s heritage.

"We’ve listened closely to the community and our stakeholders, as well as the numerous statutory consultees that are invited to comment on planning applications, and we are committed to delivering a stadium that not only meets the needs of our fans but also respects the rich heritage of Bath," McDonald stated.

"The amended submission showcases an exciting vision for the future, with significant public benefits that will positively contribute to the entire community."

In addition to the adjusted stand heights, the revised proposals include:

  • Enhanced Landscaping: Improvements to the riverside area alongside the River Avon, including a reimagined Spring Gardens Walk.
  • Seating Bowl Redesign: A re-engineered and enhanced seating bowl to optimize the fan experience.
  • Environmental Measures: Retention of mature trees and the introduction of new landscaping and biodiversity initiatives.
  • Community Spaces: Plans for a riverside café/restaurant, a club shop, and a museum remain integral to the development.
  • Looking Ahead

The plans will now be reviewed by the BANES Council, with a decision expected in the New Year. The club remains optimistic about the project’s potential to serve as a centerpiece for the community while elevating the matchday experience for fans.
