Ardie Savea has been appointed captain of Moana Pasifika for the 2025 Super Rugby Pacific season, ushering in a new chapter for the franchise.

The All Blacks loose forward, known for his dynamic play and leadership, is set to make his debut for Moana Pasifika, bringing with him a wealth of experience from more than a decade at the highest level of rugby.

The 31-year-old expressed his pride and sense of purpose in leading the team, stating, “It’s pretty special and I believe it’s God’s purpose for me to lead.”

He emphasized that his decision to take on the captaincy was made after discussions with head coach Tana Umaga, as well as personal reflection and conversations with his family.

“When I signed with the team Tana spoke to me about it and I went away and thought about it. After spending some time talking to my wife and those close to me, I realised it was the right decision to say yes,” Savea said.

Savea, who has been a dominant force in New Zealand rugby, emphasized his commitment to leading by example through his performances on the field and his approach to training.

“First and foremost I’ve got to lead myself first and that’s through my performance on the field and how I operate at trainings, and off the field as well. I also want to serve the brothers, serve the team, serve the franchise and serve the people any way I can.”

The team recently spent a weekend in camp, focusing on building chemistry ahead of the new Super Rugby season. Savea used the opportunity to connect with his new teammates, noting, “Some of the boys I’d never met before so this weekend in camp has been awesome to spend some time with the brothers.”

Head coach Fa’alogo Tana Umaga has praised Savea’s work ethic and influence, describing him as a role model who sets high standards both on and off the field.

“Ardie is a hard worker and incredible role model who pushes others to be better by setting a high standard for himself, both professionally and personally.”

Umaga added, “That’s something that stands out for us as a good leader, bringing out the best in the team and uplifting others. He’s a natural leader who is going to have a massive impact on our team.”
