Exeter Chiefs have confirmed that Ali Hepher has been appointed as an academy performance coach within the club’s player development pathway.

The move marks a return to a role focused on nurturing young talent after Hepher spent more than 16 years working as part of the senior coaching set-up.

Hepher will oversee the coaching and skills development of players from the age of 16 upwards, as well as contributing to the identification of younger prospects in the pre-academy system.

His role will include mentoring coaches and ensuring that the next generation of Chiefs players are well prepared to transition into the senior environment.

Director of Rugby Rob Baxter welcomed the appointment, noting Hepher’s experience and long-term knowledge of the club.

“Ali brings high-quality coaching and a wealth of experience into our academy group.

"This role ensures that our young players get the attention they need not just on basic skills but also on learning how to read the game and understand the demands of being a professional rugby player.”

Before joining Exeter as an assistant coach in 2009, Hepher was involved with the Northampton Saints academy, helping bring through young players into the professional game.

At Exeter, he played a key part in the club’s domestic and European successes, including their Premiership and Champions Cup double in 2020.

Chairman and Chief Executive Tony Rowe said “Ali was a vital part of our coaching team in a prolonged period of success for the club.

"Having spoken to Rob, I felt this role was key to the future advancement of our squad and the experience that Ali would bring is considerable.

"So, I am glad to welcome him back to Chiefs and I look forward to seeing the positive impact he has on our player pathway.”
