Waratahs 37-36 Highlanders, Allianz Stadium, Sydney
The Super Rugby Pacific season kicked off with an exhilarating contest as the New South Wales Waratahs edged out the Highlanders 37-36 in a dramatic encounter at Sydney's Allianz Stadium.
With nine lead changes throughout the match, it was replacement prop Siosifa Amone who delivered the decisive try, and young playmaker Jack Bowen’s conversion after the siren sealed a stunning comeback victory.
The Highlanders made a strong start, capitalizing on an early Waratahs handling error in the 6th minute, which allowed winger Caleb Tangitau to race away for the opening try. They extended their lead when co-captain Timoci Tavatavanawai powered over, showing his strength and finishing ability in midfield.
However, discipline became an issue for the visitors when lock Mitch Dunshea was shown a yellow card in the 30th minute for a dangerous tackle on Waratahs hooker David Porecki.
The home side took advantage, and in the 33rd minute, Rob Leota finished off a well-worked move to dive over in the corner after a pinpoint pass from Taniela Tupou.
A penalty goal just before halftime, following another Highlanders infringement, saw the Waratahs sneak into the break with a 13-12 lead despite the visitors dominating large portions of the opening half.
The Waratahs extended their lead in the 48th minute when Porecki powered over from a rolling maul, showcasing the effectiveness of their structured forward play. The Highlanders hit back quickly through prop Sosefo Kautai, whose try and the subsequent conversion restored their advantage.
The match continued to swing back and forth, with debutant Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii making a significant impact. His explosive running helped set up winger Max Jorgensen’s try in the 62nd minute, as the Waratahs reclaimed the lead once again.
However, the Highlanders were relentless, and Kautai crossed for his second try in the 72nd minute, putting the visitors ahead heading into the final moments.
With time winding down, the Waratahs launched one final attack, putting immense pressure on the Highlanders' defense. In the dying moments, Siosifa Amone powered over the try line, taking the score to 35-36.
The responsibility then fell to young Jack Bowen, who showed nerves of steel to slot the decisive conversion after the final siren, securing an unforgettable 37-36 victory.
