Ulster Rugby have confirmed that eight senior players will leave the squad at the end of the current season, including long-time stalwarts Alan O’Connor and Andrew Warwick.
The announcement, which also includes the exits of Ireland internationals John Cooney and Kieran Treadwell, marks the beginning of a transitional phase as new head coach Richie Murphy begins to reshape the squad for the future.
Alan O’Connor, who joined the Ulster academy in 2012, has amassed 210 senior appearances for the province and has long been recognised as one of the team’s most consistent and respected leaders.
Known for his gritty, no-nonsense style and vocal leadership, O’Connor has captained the side numerous times and is regarded as a pillar of Ulster’s forward pack over the past decade.
Loosehead prop Andrew Warwick, another player who came through the province’s development pathway, also bows out after a decade of loyal service.
A dependable figure in the front row, Warwick's scrummaging strength and quiet consistency have made him one of the most underrated yet vital components in Ulster’s forward play.
Scrum-half John Cooney, who has been a dynamic presence since joining Ulster from Connacht in 2017, will leave to join French club Brive. With over 130 appearances and a knack for clutch moments, Cooney has become a fan favourite and a game-changer in many tight contests.
Lock Kieran Treadwell, who earned international caps with Ireland and was part of the 2022 Triple Crown-winning squad, will return to Harlequins, the club where he began his professional career. Treadwell has played over 100 times for Ulster and brought athleticism and lineout expertise to the second row.
Matty Rea, a versatile back-rower who has served the club with distinction over multiple seasons, also leaves Ulster. Known for his work ethic and physicality, Rea reached the 100-appearance milestone last season and has been a dependable option across the back row.
Michael McDonald, the Australian-born scrum-half who had spent time on loan with the Waratahs, will also exit the squad, having struggled for regular game time.
Reuben Crothers, a former Ireland U20 captain, has opted to retire from professional rugby, while young tighthead Corrie Barrett is also set to depart.
