Lights, cameras, drinks, rugby and an atmosphere second to none can only mean one thing in university rugby – the Leeds Varsity.

As a fantastic summer of sevens came to a close with tournaments all over the country and the Commonwealth Games winning thousands of new fans, one of the country’s most impressive wins came from the Great Britain Students side.

For Oliver Evans a career in tennis was always the aim, although, after attaining a world ranking, it was a wrist injury that kept the British hopeful from continuing his journey; however, since then Oliver has traded in the yellow ball for an egg-shaped one and embarked on a career in rugby.

The University of Exeter rugby production line is in full flow: Luke Treharne recently representing Wales at the Commonwealth Games, five selected for the Exeter Chiefs 7s squad and three in the GB Students 7s squad.

The pinnacle of the BUCS rugby calendar – the men’s final – took place under the floodlights at Twickenham, the home of rugby, this Friday, with the southern league winners Hartpury College powering to victory over Leeds Met University.

The BUCS Rugby Championship will culminate this Friday in a fantastic finale under the lights at Twickenham which will see the men’s and women’s rugby champions for 2014 crowned.

The sun shone on Yorkshire this week as Leeds Metropolitan University proved too strong for Exeter University in the first BUCS rugby semi-final; powering to a commanding 42-18 victory which sealed their spot at Twickenham to fight for the BUCS trophy.
