Springbok Women have adjusted their backline for their upcoming Women’s Rugby World Cup match against Italy, set for Sunday at York Community Stadium in England.

Nadine Roos shifts from scrum-half to fullback, after scoring South Africa’s opening try against Brazil. She will partner with Unam Tose, who moves to scrum-half this week. Byrhandré Dolf shifts from fullback to right wing, replacing Maceala Samboya.

Chumisa Qawe begins at inside centre, taking over from Aphiwe Ngwevu who drops to the bench. Eloise Webb also joins the bench, replacing Jakkie Cilliers, marking her first World Cup appearance.

Head coach Swys de Bruin has retained the same forward pack that delivered a dominant performance against Brazil, maintaining both starting players and bench options to preserve cohesion.

De Bruin emphasized that these adjustments are specifically designed to counter Italy’s preference for kicking for territory.

“Roos’s counterattacking skills and Dolf’s open-field abilities give us tools to deal with their style.” While maintaining their traditional strengths, he highlighted the tweaks are a strategic response to combat Italy’s game plan.
