South Africa fullback is set to miss the majority of the upcoming Rugby Championship tournament after sustaining a shoulder injury.
The 23-year-old was part of the training squad announced by head coach Rassie Erasmus but will now undergo a lengthy rehabilitation period that will keep him on the sidelines for several months.
Gelant made his debut for Springboks in November last year and also featured in the final two Tests against England in the recently concluded series in June.
South Africa will open the 2018 Rugby Championship campaign with a clash against Argentina at Jonsson Kings Park Stadium in Durban on 18th August.
Turn a setback into a come back. I will undergo surgery soon on my shoulder. Will be out of action for a few months. pic.twitter.com/GFgCy2nBjx— Warrick Gelant (@WarrickGelant) 29 July 2018
