Crusaders head coach Scott Robertson said the club will be desperately hoping for Kieran Read to recover from the recent injury setback that he sustained during the 8-32 Super Rugby win over Hurricanes at Westpac Stadium last week.

Read suffered a leg injury during the first half but continued to play until he was replaced by Jordan Taufua at the start of the second half.

Robertson provided an update on the All Blacks skipper but was unwilling to give a time frame on his return back to the game.

“Technically, he has got a double haematoma,” Robertson told Reuters.

“He got two knocks in the same place and he seized up at half-time, so we took him off.

“He went all right when he was on, he went a full 100 percent.

“I thought he was going to ease himself back into the game, but in that first five minutes, the amount of touches and tackles he made, it was pretty impressive.”

Read recently underwent surgery on his back and had already announced that he will retire from international rugby at the end of the upcoming World Cup scheduled later this year in Japan.
