Chiefs 49-12 Crusaders, FMG Stadium Waikato

The Chiefs booked their place in the Super Rugby Pacific Grand Final with a stunning 49-12 win over the Crusaders.

It was a remarkable performance from last year’s finalists, who produced a ruthless attacking display and scored 42 points in the first half. It was their biggest win over the Crusaders and their highest first-half score against the defending champions.

The result also ended the Crusaders’ strong finals record. They had gone into the match unbeaten in their previous seven semi-finals and their last five finals matches against the Chiefs.

Taumoefolau Starts Chiefs Onslaught

The Chiefs started with real intent. Quinn Tupaea set the tone with a half break and steal that put the hosts on the attack. His centre partner Lalakai Foketi then produced a fine pass to send Kyren Taumoefolau over for the opening try.

Taumoefolau soon had his second. After Damian McKenzie kicked through, the winger used his boot to control the ball and score his 10th try of the season to make it 14-0.

Foketi continued to trouble the Crusaders defence and then set up Isaac Hutchinson, who dived over for another Chiefs try. Hutchinson’s match ended soon after because of injury, but the Chiefs did not slow down.

Chiefs Take Full Control Before Break

Samisoni Taukei’aho crossed next as the Chiefs raced to a 28-0 lead. Chay Fihaki gave the Crusaders a brief response with their first try, but it did little to halt the home side’s momentum.

The Chiefs kept attacking with confidence. Replacement Leroy Carter added another try before Tupou Vaa’i also crossed, giving the hosts a huge 42-5 lead at half-time.

The Crusaders’ problems grew when Leicester Fainga’anuku suffered an ankle injury before the break.

Crusaders Unable To Fight Back

The Crusaders needed a fast start to the second half, but their hopes were hurt when Christian Lio-Willie’s try was ruled out for a knock-on.

Captain David Havili eventually forced his way over for a powerful try, giving the Crusaders something to take from a difficult night. But the result was already beyond doubt.

Xavier Roe scored late for the Chiefs, sealing the 49-12 victory and helping them match their highest score against the Crusaders.

It was the Chiefs’ first finals win over the Crusaders since 2013. They will now face the winner of the Hurricanes and Blues in the Grand Final.
