The Rugby Football Union have confirmed that Worcester Warriors have been suspended for the remainder of the Gallagher Premiership season at the end of which they will be relegated to the second tier.

The news follows after the WRFC Players Ltd, the company through which the salaries were paid has been liquidated in the High Court on Wednesday which meant the players and staff members' contract were terminated.

"Under RFU Regulations, Worcester Warriors will be relegated from the Gallagher Premiership, and therefore if investors can be secured, the club will restart in the Championship in season 2023/24. The club is able to appeal this decision if it can show there was no fault insolvency," read a RFU statement.

The Warriors have been played in the administration since last Monday after the England board suspended them from all competitions, including Gallagher Premiership Rugby, Allianz Premier 15s, and Allianz Cup with immediate effect as they failed to meet the RFU’s deadline to provide a credible plan for their future finances and the required insurances for the payroll.

"All parties continue to work together to provide the best possible outcome for Worcester Warriors over the long term," RFU CEO Bill Sweeney said.

"This includes discussions with the administrator and potential funders, which may enable the University of Worcester Warriors women's team to continue in the Allianz Premier 15s this season, and we are fully committed to ensuring local academy opportunities are provided for pathway players."
