The Hurricanes have confirmed that Ngani Laumape will make a long-awaited return to Wellington ahead of the 2026 Super Rugby Pacific season.

The powerful midfielder, who last played for the Hurricanes in 2021, will rejoin the club after completing a stint with Moana Pasifika.

The 32-year-old enjoyed six standout years with the Hurricanes from 2016 to 2021, making 85 appearances and scoring 49 tries. He was part of the side that lifted the 2016 Super Rugby title and later went on to play 15 Tests for the All Blacks, establishing himself as one of the most destructive midfielders of his era.

Following his time in New Zealand, Laumape played for Stade Français in France and later the Kobelco Kobe Steelers in Japan Rugby League One. He then signed with Moana Pasifika, representing the side in 2025 before deciding to return to his former home at Sky Stadium.

Speaking about his comeback, Laumape expressed excitement about wearing Hurricanes colours again.

“Wellington will always be home, and the Hurricanes will always hold a special place in my heart. I’m grateful for everything they have done for me and my family. To have the opportunity to return is something really special.”

He added that while his respect for Moana Pasifika remains strong, the chance to once again represent the Hurricanes was too important to turn down.

“It’s going to be emotional coming back, but once the game starts, it’s all about business. I want to contribute to this team and help bring success back to the Canes.”

Hurricanes head coach Clark Laidlaw said the return of Laumape would provide the squad with experience and physicality.

“Ngani is a proven match-winner and a player who can turn games in an instant. His familiarity with the Hurricanes environment, combined with the growth he has shown overseas, makes this an incredibly exciting signing for us heading into 2026.”
