All Blacks midfielder Peter Umaga-Jensen has been granted an early release by the Hurricanes to pursue his career in Japan, marking a new chapter for the 27-year-old Wellington-bound star.
Born and bred in Wellington, Umaga-Jensen has spent his entire professional career in his home region, representing Wellington in the National Provincial Championship and debuting for the Hurricanes in Super Rugby in 2018.
Over 54 appearances in Super Rugby, he made a notable impact. In his standout 50th match against the Crusaders, he scored a double, a feat he repeated in a later clash with Moana Pasifika where he also broke clear for a 50-metre run.
His debut for the All Blacks came at age 22, coming off the bench in a Bledisloe Cup test at Eden Park.
Umaga-Jensen shared heartfelt reflections on his time with the club:
“I started here as a young fella chasing a dream, and it’s been an incredible ride ever since. I’ve made memories that will stay with me forever and built lifelong friendships that I’ll always treasure.
“One day, I hope I’ll be sitting down with all the boys, sharing a beer and a laugh as we look back on everything we experienced together.
“Thank you to the Hurricanes for giving a Wainui kid the chance to live out his dream. Until next time.”
Hurricanes head coach Clark Laidlaw praised him for his strong connection with the club:
“He played 54 games for the Hurricanes... Local boy, local family… representing his club Wainuiomata with great distinction. This year, he really stepped up and played some of his best rugby in a Hurricanes jersey.
“Everyone at the club wishes him all the best... it’s a great opportunity for his family to experience a new lifestyle and a different rugby journey. We are going to miss him.”
