Leicester Tigers have confirmed the signing of Mako Vunipola, with the experienced loosehead set to join the club from French side Vannes.
The move adds major front-row experience to Leicester’s squad planning, with the former England international becoming one of several new arrivals ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Mako Vunipola Signs For Leicester Tigers
Vunipola joins Leicester after making 32 appearances for Vannes since leaving Saracens.
The 35-year-old brings a long record at the top level of the professional game, having built his reputation in the PREM, Europe and international rugby. His arrival gives Leicester proven depth at loosehead and another experienced option in the pack.
Former England Prop Brings Major Experience
The prop is a former England international and a three-time British and Irish Lion.
Across those Lions tours, he played in nine Tests, underlining the level of experience Leicester are adding.
Head coach Geoff Parling said Vunipola’s quality, hunger and character made him an important addition, both as a player and as a senior figure who can help younger front-rowers develop.
“Firstly, it’s great to welcome someone of Mako’s experience and quality into the squad next season.
"He’s a proven international loosehead that is hungry to come back to the PREM to finish his career and is looking for a place that can get the best from him whilst offering the opportunity to play in big games.
“Secondly, he’s an outstanding character that will add real value to the group.
"He will be here to play and play well, but it will also be an opportunity for our young looseheads to develop and learn from someone who has repeatedly performed at the top of the game, and he’s also excited to help with our younger academy players to push their careers forwards.”
Leicester Tigers Add To New Signings
Vunipola becomes part of Leicester’s incoming group for next season, joining centre Joe Jenkins, prop Joel Sclavi and hooker Jack Doorey-Palmer.
For Vunipola, the move marks a return to PREM rugby as he prepares for the next stage of his career at Welford Road.
“It still hasn’t sunk in. It’s something that I would never have envisaged, but I am honoured to be part of this prestigious club.
“Tigers are an incredibly well-supported club, and those fans are so passionate about their rugby.
“There is a history behind the club. Whenever you play at Mattioli Woods Welford Road you're in for a huge challenge - it’s something I can’t wait to experience.”
