Liam Williams has announced his retirement from professional rugby with immediate effect, bringing the career of one of Wales’ most accomplished backs to a close.
The 34-year-old steps away after an injury-hit spell with Newcastle Red Bulls, ending a professional journey that included major success for club and country.
Liam Williams Retires From Professional Rugby
Williams leaves the game after winning 93 caps for Wales and featuring in five Tests across two British and Irish Lions tours.
He was part of Wales’ 2019 Six Nations Grand Slam-winning side and remained a major figure in international rugby for more than a decade.
Wales And Club Career Highlights
At club level, Williams enjoyed success in both Wales and England. He won the URC title with Scarlets in the 2016-17 season and later lifted the PREM and Champions Cup with Saracens.
He also had spells with Cardiff and Japanese side Kubota Spears before joining Newcastle.
Newcastle Spell Ends After Injury Frustration
Williams joined Newcastle Red Bulls last summer but made only three appearances, with injuries limiting his contribution on the field.
In announcing his decision, he thanked the club and its supporters for welcoming him and his family during their time in the North East.
“I’ve loved my time as a professional rugby player, during which time I’ve made so many great friends and enjoyed incredible memories.
“Unfortunately injuries have meant I have not been able to contribute on the field as much as I would have liked during my time in Newcastle, but I would like to thank the club and our supporters for making my family and I feel so welcome during our time in the North East.
“It’s a great club with a really exciting future, and despite my own playing opportunities being limited due to injury I hope I have been able to contribute positively behind the scenes towards the continued growth of the squad.”
