Wales have confirmed the appointment of Peter Murchie as their new defence coach, ending an eight-month wait to fill the position on a permanent basis.
Peter Murchie Appointed Wales Defence Coach
The former Scotland international will join head coach Steve Tandy’s backroom team on a full-time basis ahead of this summer’s Nations Championship. Murchie is currently defence coach at Japanese side Kobe Steelers and will take up his new role after the conclusion of the Rugby League One season.
The 40-year-old previously worked with Glasgow Warriors, where he was part of the coaching group that guided the club to the 2023/24 United Rugby Championship title. His arrival brings specialist defensive expertise to the Wales set-up as preparations continue for upcoming international competitions.
End Of Wales Defence Coach Vacancy
Murchie’s appointment brings clarity after a prolonged vacancy in the role. Mike Forshaw’s contract with the Welsh Rugby Union expired last June, with Cardiff’s Gethin Jenkins overseeing defensive duties on an interim basis during the Japan tour.
Following Tandy’s appointment as Wales head coach, defensive responsibilities were shared, with Dan Lydiate assisting on secondment from the Dragons. The confirmation of Murchie completes the full-time coaching structure.
Nations Championship And World Cup 2027 Focus
Murchie began his coaching career in France with Stade Nicois before moving to Glasgow. He also briefly filled in as Scotland defence coach in 2021 during Tandy’s British & Irish Lions commitments.
“I have enjoyed the experience of coaching and living in Kobe," said Murchie. "Working with world class players and coaching group has been excellent.
“The opportunity to move into international rugby with Wales, where there are so many exciting competitions on the horizon was something that me and my family are hugely excited about.
“Steve was a huge driver for me, I know he is a world class coach and we have worked together closely before. I am looking forward to joining up with the squad in the summer and getting to work.”
