Wales fullback Leigh Halfpenny will miss the upcoming autumn international Test against South Africa at Principality Stadium on Saturday after failing to make sufficient recovery from a concussion.

The 29-year-old suffered the blow during the final minutes of the game against Australia which his side went on to win 9-6 on 10th November.

Wales assistant coach Rob Howley revealed that Halfpenny participated on a light training session last weekend but felt discomfort.

“Leigh is out. He did some training on Saturday morning and was feeling a little bit light headed,” he said.

Warren Gatland's side will be hoping to sign off their November series campaign undefeated after 21-10, 9-6 and 74-24 wins over Scotland, Australia and Tonga respectively.

However, they will be up against a resurgent South African side that had earlier defeated England 2-1 during the series in June and suffered a narrow 12-11 defeat to the same opposition at the start of the November. They also enjoyed success over All Blacks in the Rugby Championship and will be heading into Saturday's game with victories over France and Scotland.

“South Africa will be highly motivated. There’s a landscape when we play South Africa. The contact area is pretty crucial,” added Howley.

“When we play South Africa, there always seems to be a lot of aerial kicking. We always enjoy playing South Africa.

“It will be one of our toughest games this autumn but we have certainly got a lot of self-belief and confidence. The players don’t want that streak to end.”

Meanwhile, Wales have also confirmed that George North has recovered from a bruised leg and will be available for the weekend's game.
