The All Blacks have suffered an injury setback ahead of their Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry tour opener against the Stormers, with hooker George Bell ruled out of the South Africa tour.

Bell has returned home from South Africa after suffering a calf strain during training in Cape Town.

The injury is expected to sideline him for up to six weeks, ruling him out of New Zealand’s full tour of South Africa. The All Blacks are due to begin the tour against the Stormers on August 7, with the trip running until September 12.

Bradley Slater Called Into Squad

Taranaki and Blues hooker Bradley Slater has been called up as Bell’s replacement.

The 27-year-old is expected to arrive in South Africa on Wednesday and will provide additional cover in the front row as the All Blacks prepare for their opening clash in Cape Town.

Dave Rennie Reacts To Injury Blow

All Blacks head coach Dave Rennie said the squad was disappointed for Bell after the injury setback.

“We are all gutted for George, to be ruled out of the tour so early,” said Rennie.

“He’s had a frustrating past few months with injury, so it’s a real blow for him to have injured his calf again.

“We look forward to seeing him return [for his club] and put himself in a position to push for All Blacks selection later in the year.”
