Former All Blacks wing Julian Savea has been appointed head coach of Mahurangi Rugby Club, with the 35-year-old set to take charge after completing the NPC season with Wellington Lions in October.

Savea will lead the North Harbour premier side as he begins the next stage of his rugby career in coaching.
The former All Blacks finisher said coaching had long been part of his ambition and described the Mahurangi role as a chance to step out of his comfort zone.
“I’m just stepping out of my comfort zone. I’ve always wanted to be a coach,” Savea stated.
“Pete said there was an opportunity at Mahurangi, so I caught up with Sully and talked about the possibilities. I feel like I’ve got so much to give and a philosophy that I would love to express through a team.”
Savea secured the opportunity through former Moana Pasifika team manager Peter White, who helped connect him with the club.
Former All Black Eyes Coaching Career
Savea had scored 45 tries in 54 Tests for the All Blacks and built a reputation for power, pace and finishing ability.
Although injuries limited his playing role last season, Savea remained involved with Moana Pasifika’s coaching and analysis work, giving him further exposure to the off-field side of the game.
