Munster Rugby has confirmed the return of experienced out-half JJ Hanrahan on a two-year contract, set to commence this summer.

The 32-year-old playmaker has an impressive record with Munster, accumulating 743 points across 142 appearances, making him the third-highest points scorer in the province’s history. His ability to cover out-half, centre, and full-back adds further versatility to Munster’s backline.

Hanrahan first debuted for Munster in September 2012 against the Dragons and quickly established himself as a key player. In 2014, he earned the Young Player of the Year award, alongside securing the PRO12 Golden Boot for his 88.71% kicking accuracy.

After his initial spell with Munster, Hanrahan made a move to Northampton Saints in 2015, gaining valuable experience in the Premiership before returning to Munster in 2017.

He later played for Clermont Auvergne in the Top 14, followed by stints at Dragons and Connacht, where he continued to demonstrate his playmaking ability and leadership.

Over the past two seasons with Connacht, Hanrahan amassed 145 points in 23 appearances, proving his continued value at the highest level. His return to Munster comes at a crucial time as the club aims to strengthen its squad for domestic and European challenges.

Hanrahan’s signing is part of a broader recruitment strategy, with the province also securing centre Dan Kelly, prop Michael Milne, and hooker Lee Barron.

In addition, five academy graduates—Fionn Gibbons, Shay McCarthy, Evan O’Connell, Ruadhán Quinn, and Kieran Ryan—will be promoted to the senior squad, reinforcing Munster’s commitment to homegrown talent.
