Munster Rugby has confirmed the appointment of Clayton McMillan as the club’s new head coach, replacing Graham Rowntree, who departed by mutual consent in October.

The New Zealand-born coach, currently leading Super Rugby’s Chiefs, will officially take charge in July on a three-year contract.

McMillan, a highly regarded coach in New Zealand rugby, has previously led the Maori All Blacks and the All Blacks XV, securing a win over Munster at Thomond Park in 2022.

His leadership and experience are expected to bring a fresh approach to Munster’s playing style.

Expressing his excitement about joining one of Europe’s most historic clubs, McMillan acknowledged the passion and tradition of Munster Rugby.

"I am humbled to be given the opportunity to lead Munster, an iconic club steeped in history. Leading the All Blacks XV against Munster last year gave me insight into the immense pride and passion of the club's players, staff, and wider rugby community.

"It was an incredible atmosphere and left a lasting impression."

He also emphasized how the club’s values resonate with his coaching philosophy.

"I am excited by the club's ambition and core values. They align strongly with my own, and I look forward to joining the team in July."

While McMillan prepares to take over, Ian Costello will remain interim head coach until the end of the season before transitioning into a newly created role of general manager.

Meanwhile, attack coach Mike Prendergast, who was a candidate for the head coach role, will be promoted to senior coach in the summer.

Munster’s chief executive Ian Flanagan highlighted McMillan’s suitability for the role, stating:

"After a thorough recruitment process, we are delighted to secure Clayton McMillan as our new head coach.

"Throughout our conversations with Clayton, what really stood out was his experience and how his coaching philosophy and values align with what we want to achieve at Munster Rugby."
