Ireland international Jared Payne has been withdrawn from Tuesday's tour game against Super Rugby champions Hurricanes due to a headache.

Payne's place on the bench has been taken by Wales fullback Leigh Halfpenny, who was among the replacements during the first Test against New Zealand in Auckland, which Lions went on to lose 30-15.

The news was confirmed by a statement released by the Lions ahead of the game.

"Jared Payne has been replaced on the bench for the British and Irish Lions clash with the Hurricanes at Westpac Stadium on Tuesday night," read a Lions statement.

"Payne - who has reported with a headache and has been stood down as a precaution - has been replaced by Leigh Halfpenny for the game."
