Ieuan Evans will step down as Chair of The British & Irish Lions on October 21, bringing to an end four years in the role and a long association with the organisation as both player and administrator.

Evans concludes four-year term as Lions Chair

Evans was appointed Chair in 2022 and has overseen a significant period for the Lions, including the 2025 Men’s Tour to Australia and preparations for the inaugural Howden Lions Women’s Tour to New Zealand in 2027.

He also served as Tour Manager for the 2025 Australia campaign, which the Lions described as a record-breaking success.

“It has been an enormous privilege to serve as Chair of The British & Irish Lions,” Evans said.

“The Lions has played a hugely important part in my life, from the honour of representing the jersey as a player to helping shape its future as Chair.”

Role in inaugural Lions Women’s Tour

Evans has also played a major part in the development of the first Lions Women’s Tour, including chairing the feasibility study that helped establish the foundations for the 2027 New Zealand campaign.

His tenure also included changes to the Lions Board and the recruitment of independent directors as part of the organisation’s governance development.

Lions chief executive Ben Calveley praised Evans’ contribution and highlighted his role in the 2025 tour, the Women’s Lions project and strengthening the organisation’s governance.

"Ieuan has given an extraordinary amount to The British & Irish Lions over the years, both as a player and through his leadership as Chair. His infectious passion for the Lions and understanding of what makes this organisation so special has been evident throughout his time in the role.

"His contribution has been particularly significant during a period of real progress for the organisation, from the record-breaking success of the 2025 Tour to helping lay the foundations for the inaugural Lions Women's Tour, and strengthening the governance of the organisation".

Three-time Lions tourist ends board tenure

Evans represented the British & Irish Lions on three tours during his playing career, travelling to Australia in 1989, New Zealand in 1993 and South Africa in 1997.

His departure as Chair will also mark the end of his time on the Lions Board.

The British & Irish Lions said an Independent Chair will be appointed following the completion of a recruitment process, with a further announcement to follow.
