James Downey retires from professional rugby

Ireland international and Wasps centre James Downey has brought an end to his 13-year professional rugby career after he announced his decision to retire next month.

The 35-year-old made his debut in 2003 for Leinster and has worked with various clubs which includes Connacht, Munster, Calvisano, Northampton, Glasgow and Wasps with his only international appearance for Ireland coming in June 2013 against Canada.

Downey felt overwhelmed on representing so many clubs and is glad on leaving the game "on his own terms."

“I have really enjoyed every moment of being a professional player, and I have been lucky to have represented some great teams along the way,” he said.

“I am one of the lucky ones who can finish on my own terms, not having it cut short like so many do.

“I’ve loved every minute along the way and been fortunate to have had a few successful years too, but now I am looking forward to starting the next chapter in my life.”

Downey is now set to take up a career in finance.
