Glasgow Warriors have revealed their plan to install an artificial pitch at their home ground Scotstoun Stadium for the upcoming 2016/17 season.

The Scottish club encountered a lot of difficulty with the current surface at their stadium, especially with the drainage system which forced the club to shift three of their fixtures to the Rugby Park at Kilmarnock.

After impressed with the artificial pitch in the Rugby Park, the Glasgow Warriors are working on the plans to have their own.

Glasgow will not be the first team to use an artificial pitch as the likes of Cardiff Blues, Saracens and Newcastle Falcons already have it in place.

The proposal is expected to be voted this week by the councillors from Glasgow City Council and apart from the artificial pitch, there are also plans to improve training facilities for athletes.

Meanwhile, Scotland international and Glasgow wing Sean Lamont believes the artificial pitch will benefit the club.

"We've played on Kilmarnock's pitch a few times and when its wet it's a great surface, especially for the style we want to play at Glasgow.

"We're all about fast, top-of-the-ground rugby so I think a synthetic pitch would be great."

Warriors head coach Gregor Townsend said the club enjoyed playing at the Rugby Park and such a pitch installed in Scotstoun will be a big boost.

"It's fantastic news that we're close to securing a brand new pitch at Scotstoun for next season.

"We've played a lot on the Cardiff Arms Park surface over the last few years and we enjoyed playing on the Rugby Park pitch last season.

"We aim to play high tempo rugby and this state-of-the-art artificial surface will help us produce a faster game."

The project will be funded by Glasgow City Council, Scottish Rugby and sportscotland.
