Gold medal winning Olympics champion Viliame Mata has penned a two-year deal with Pro12 club Edinburgh.

The former rugby league player was one of the try-scorer for the Fiji sevens in their 43-7 final victory against the Great Britain in the Rio Olympics. The 6ft 5in flanker scored eight tries from 20 games which earned him a spot in the Fiji Olympics squad.

The 24-year-old said he is keen to make his debut for the Murrayfield Stadium based outfit.

"My goal was to win the gold medal for Fiji and we got it. Now my goal is to perform well for my new team.

"I am excited about signing for Edinburgh Rugby and am looking forward to playing for the club.

"I am also excited about arriving in the city and meeting my new team-mates."

Edinburgh head coach Alan Solomons is excited with his latest signing and believes Mata can be an asset to the club.

"We are delighted to welcome Bill to the club. He is big, powerful and explosive and I believe he will add huge value to the team."
