Dragons RFC have officially confirmed the signing of South African fly-half Tinus de Beer from Cardiff Rugby for the 2025–26 season, bolstering their playmaking options ahead of the new campaign.
The move had long been anticipated following De Beer’s diminishing role at Cardiff in the current season.
The 29-year-old made a notable impression at Cardiff’s Arms Park after joining for the 2023–24 season. However, with the arrival of Wales international Callum Sheedy from Bristol Bears and the impending addition of Ioan Lloyd from Scarlets, De Beer’s starting opportunities in the Welsh capital became increasingly limited.
Head coach Filo Tiatia welcomed the addition of the experienced South African, praising both his attacking threat and defensive commitment.
"We looked closely at how he (De Beer) plays the game and we're excited by the way he can add to us and his attacking nature. He's a strong defender, a player who puts himself on the front line, and he brings real tactical awareness to the game," said Tiatia.
De Beer, a former South Africa U20s international, expressed his enthusiasm for the move and sees it as a pivotal step in his rugby development.
"I'm excited to build strong relationships within the team and be part of a culture that values hard work, honesty, respect, and continuous improvement," he said.
"The history of the club and the support it receives from the community are incredibly inspiring and I'm excited to be part of a club with such a rich history and passionate supporter base."
While Dragons have not disclosed the exact length of De Beer’s contract, his arrival signifies a clear intention by the region to reinforce their backline with experience and versatility.
