Crusaders have announced the signing of Johnny McNicholl for the remainder of the ongoing Super Rugby season.

McNicholl started his career with provincial side Canterbury in 2011 with his Super Rugby debut for Crusaders coming in 2013. Since then he has played for the club 39 times apart from another 60 games for Canterbury before moving to Scarlets in 2016.

The 33-year-old featured in over 120 games for the Welsh province and made his Wales debut in the 2020 Six Nations game against France. He has represented Wales in 10 Tests.

“I’m really looking forward to running out in front of the home crowd again, I didn’t think I’d get that opportunity again so yeah, it’s pretty special,” McNicholl told the club's official website.

“It’s also great for me and my family to be coming back home after a decent stint overseas.”

Crusaders head coach Rob Penney is pleased with McNicholl making a return to the club as they look to get their first win of the competition.

"He’ll provide cover while Will Jordan is sideline for the season following shoulder surgery in February.

“Johnny’s a top-notch operator with proven experience and like any good fullback, he has the potential to produce magic from anywhere on the field,” Penney said.

“We’re looking forward to seeing him back in the colours in 2024.”
