Corniel van Zyl has signed a new long-term contract to become the permanent head coach of Cardiff Rugby, with the club confirming the appointment as it prepares for its 150th season.
The South African stepped up from his role as forwards coach after Matt Sherratt’s departure and has now been given the job on a full-time basis after a strong run of results and visible progress on the field.
Corniel Van Zyl Named Cardiff Head Coach
Van Zyl joined Cardiff in 2024 as forwards coach and quickly became an important figure within the rugby programme.
He took over after Sherratt left for Wales duties and has since guided the side through a promising period.
Cardiff said the decision to hand him the role permanently reflects his coaching ability, leadership and the standards he has driven during the season.
“We are really pleased to formally appoint Corniel as our new head coach on a long-term basis," said Cardiff Rugby Managing Director, Jamie Muir.
“We have built a strong working relationship this season and I have seen at first-hand the standards he brings and drives every day.
“It is a significant appointment for the club and one that has the full backing of myself and the board. We believe Corniel is the right person to lead our rugby programme and to continue strengthening every aspect of our high-performance environment.
“We didn’t want to rush into a decision when Matt Sherratt departed but we have all been so impressed with Corniel. He brings a different edge to the club, and a real competitive mindset combined with calm leadership".
Cardiff Rugby Reward Strong Home Form
Under van Zyl’s leadership, Cardiff have built an impressive record at the Arms Park, winning 89 per cent of their home matches.
The club has also highlighted the development of a younger group of players and the team’s push towards the BKT United Rugby Championship play-offs.
Long-Term Cardiff Plan Backed By Club
Van Zyl said it was an honour and privilege to lead a club with such history and spoke of his desire to improve every aspect of Cardiff Rugby.
“It is such an honour and privilege to take the lead at Cardiff as we enter our 150th season. It is a club full of history and with a very exciting future ahead.
“I am very thankful for the opportunity and challenge that lies ahead and grateful to Jamie and the board for their backing.
“The mission is very simple – to improve every aspect of Cardiff Rugby. From all departments, resources, staff and players, we want to continuing growing, focusing on the finer details and margins to ensure we keep progressing in the right direction."
