The city council has approved Edinburgh Rugby's move to shift from Murrayfield to Myreside on a trial basis.

The Pro 12 club is expected to shift between January to May next year with an intention to play the 2017-18 season at Watsonians' ground.

Edinburgh managing director Jonny Petrie said: "We are delighted with the outcome of today's ruling, and welcome the support of the council.

"Edinburgh truly is one of Europe's great rugby cities and this decision kicks off a very important time for Edinburgh Rugby and its partnership with George Watson's College, who we would like to thank for their ongoing support."

Edinburgh has confirmed that they are planning to increase Myreside's capacity with additional 6,000 seats by adding temporary stands.

The Murrayfield Stadium has a capacity of 67,500 spectators and Petrie told BBC Scotland that the club will be better served with packed smaller stadium.

"Having a smaller venue, with the crowds we are getting just now - and being able to grow that, will be much better for us," Petrie told BBC Scotland.

"That's been a challenge at Murrayfield when sometimes the crowd gets lost.

"We'll have a home venue the players can really indentify with, they can become closer to the supporters, and it becomes a more intimidating place for teams to come as well."

Edinburgh clash against Timisoara Saracens in the European Challenge Cup in January will be their first game at Myreside if things go as per the plan.
