Gloucester Rugby have announced a contract extension for fly-half Charlie Atkinson, ensuring the talented young player will remain at Kingsholm beyond the current season.

Oxford-born Atkinson, a highly regarded product of the Wasps academy, began his professional rugby journey with 39 appearances for the now-suspended Wasps.

Following their Premiership exit in 2022, he joined Leicester Tigers, making 23 appearances before transferring to Gloucester Rugby in December 2023.

Since arriving at Kingsholm, Atkinson has quickly become a key figure in the squad, contributing 21 points across 16 matches.

His performances in the Cherry & White jersey have garnered attention as he continues to impress, even earning two caps for England ‘A’ over the past year. Many view him as a potential future senior England international.

Director of Rugby George Skivington expressed his delight at securing Atkinson’s services for the long term.

"We were pleased to bring Charlie to Kingsholm last season and like we said at the time, we think his ceiling is pretty high.

"The way we’re playing now relies on our half-backs to make good decisions around where and when we play, and that’s a lot of pressure for a young man, but Charlie is taking it all in his stride."

Skivington also highlighted the competitive nature of Atkinson’s position, noting how it has driven the squad to push for excellence.

The 22-year-old fly-half expressed his enthusiasm for continuing his journey with Gloucester Rugby.

"I’m very happy to re-sign here at Kingsholm and it was a very easy decision to make. Since I arrived at Gloucester, everyone welcomed me with open arms and took me in and I’m really thankful for that."
