Cardiff Blues lock George Earle has been handed an eight-week ban following his sent-off in the European Challenge Cup encounter against Bath Rugby at Recreation Ground last week.

The incident happened in the 48th minute of the game which Bath went on to win 38-3 when he involved in an eye gouging incident involving flanker Tom Ellis and was handed a red card by referee Alexandre Ruiz.

The 29-year-old pleaded not guilty in an independent hearing conducted by the European disciplinary panel.

However, considering his track record and the fact he apologised to Ellis, the panel deemed his offence was at the low end of World Rugby's sanctions.

The ban will be effective from Cardiff Blues' Pro12 clash against Newport Gwent Dragons that begins on 26th December and can resume playing from 13th February onwards.
