Blues 29-13 Crusaders, Eden Park
The Blues produced an impressive performance at Eden Park to defeat the Crusaders 29-13 and revive their Super Rugby Pacific campaign.
The Auckland side bounced back strongly after their narrow loss in Canberra the previous week and temporarily moved into the competition’s top four.
A fast start from the Blues proved decisive, with their attacking play and defensive discipline allowing them to control large periods of the match against the defending champions.
Caleb Clarke Double Gives Blues Early Control
The Blues started aggressively and struck early through winger Caleb Clarke. The All Blacks winger crossed twice inside the opening nine minutes, giving the hosts immediate momentum and putting pressure on the Crusaders defence.
The Crusaders had briefly celebrated a try from Jamie Hannah earlier in the contest, but the situation changed quickly when Dom Gardiner was shown a yellow card for a high tackle. With the Crusaders reduced to 14 players, the Blues capitalised.
Shortly afterwards, Beauden Barrett produced a moment of quality in his first appearance of the 2026 season. Barrett launched a precise kick into space that winger Codemeru Vai chased down brilliantly, collecting the ball near the sideline before finishing in the corner. The try helped the Blues extend their lead to 19-3 after just 21 minutes.
Crusaders Fight Back Before Halftime
Despite the difficult start, the Crusaders responded late in the first half. The Blues suffered a setback when Clarke received a yellow card for a deliberate knock-down, allowing the Crusaders to take advantage of the numerical superiority.
Hooker Codie Taylor crossed for the Crusaders’ first try following sustained pressure near the Blues line. Moments later, fly-half Rivez Reihana finished off a well-worked attacking move that he had started with a clever kick, eventually diving over after receiving a flick pass from scrum-half Noah Hotham.
Those two tries helped the Crusaders narrow the deficit to just six points at halftime.
Clarke Hat-Trick Secures Blues Victory
The Blues regained control shortly after the break. Clarke returned from the sin-bin and quickly made an impact, completing his hat-trick to extend the Blues’ lead and restore momentum for the home side.
From that point the Blues managed the game effectively, with their defence shutting down most Crusaders attacks. The Crusaders had a promising opportunity with ten minutes remaining, but a strong defensive tackle dislodged the ball just short of the try line.
A late penalty from Beauden Barrett added further points and secured the 29-13 victory. The result ended a four-match losing run for the Blues against the Crusaders at Eden Park and gave their season renewed momentum.
