Bath 43-41 Northampton, The Rec
Bath Rugby produced a stunning late comeback to defeat Northampton Saints 43-41 at The Rec and book their place in the Investec Champions Cup semi-finals.
In a high-scoring and relentless quarter-final, Bath overturned a large early deficit and delivered the decisive blow in the closing minutes to complete one of their most memorable European wins.
Northampton made the stronger start and capitalised immediately after Miles Reid was shown a yellow card inside the opening two minutes. The visitors struck quickly with two early tries from Henry Pollock and Fraser Dingwall to race into a 14-0 lead, putting Bath under immediate pressure.
Saints Dominate Early As Bath Respond
Bath needed a response and found one through Tom Dunn, who powered over from close range after a series of pick-and-go phases, reducing the gap to 14-7. However, Northampton continued to control territory and added two more tries to extend their lead to 28-7 as their attack found space and rhythm.
Bath began to settle as the half progressed. Finn Russell produced a moment of individual brilliance, chipping ahead and regathering to score, cutting the deficit to 28-14.
Ollie Sleightholme then crossed for Northampton to stretch the lead again, but Bath responded quickly through Henry Arundell, whose pace brought the home side back into the contest at 35-21.
The momentum continued to swing as Francois van Wyk, on for the injured Beno Obano, crashed over late in the half. That try brought Bath within touching distance, and they went into the break trailing 35-26.
Second Half Swings Back And Forth
Northampton started the second half strongly, with Fin Smith adding a penalty to extend the lead to 38-26. But Bath’s bench began to make a significant impact, with fresh forwards helping the hosts gain control through sustained pressure.
That pressure told when Saints were reduced to 14 men after a yellow card to JJ van der Mescht, and Bath took full advantage. Kepu Tuipulotu finished from the back of a driving maul to close the gap to 38-33.
Smith responded with another penalty to push Northampton back ahead at 41-33, but Bath refused to let the game slip away. Russell slotted a penalty to make it 41-36 and keep the home side within striking distance heading into the final stages.
Hill Try Seals Dramatic Comeback
Bath continued to apply relentless pressure deep inside the Saints’ half. With Northampton down to 14 again after Henry Pollock was shown a yellow card, the decisive moment arrived.
Ted Hill powered through the defensive line to score, bringing Bath level. Russell then converted to give the hosts a 43-41 lead for the first time in the match with just minutes remaining.
