Australia have suffered a major setback ahead of the British & Irish Lions series, with first-choice fly-half Noah Lolesio confirmed to miss the upcoming Tests following neck surgery.

The injury was sustained during the Wallabies’ tightly contested 21–18 win over Fiji in Newcastle, where Lolesio was forced off the field in the 61st minute.

The 25-year-old was initially released from hospital after the match but was later readmitted for surgery following further medical evaluations.

Rugby Australia announced that Lolesio “has had successful surgery today,” confirming he will "spend a period of time away from the game during his rehabilitation."

Wallabies head coach Joe Schmidt expressed relief and optimism.

“Firstly, we were relieved that Noah was up and moving well when he returned to the team hotel after his initial hospital visit in Newcastle on Sunday.

"Further to that, it’s an added relief for everyone, especially his family, that successful surgery now has him on the road to recovery.”

Lolesio had been named in every Test since Schmidt’s arrival and was expected to lead the attack through the three-match Lions series beginning July 19 in Brisbane.

His absence creates a crucial gap at fly-half, with Schmidt now evaluating options like Ben Donaldson, Tom Lynagh, and potential late inclusions such as James O’Connor or Bernard Foley to step into the pivotal No. 10 role.
