Wales lock Cory Hill will head back home without playing a single game in the ongoing World Cup after failing to make sufficient recovery from a stress fracture on his leg.

The 27-year-old has been sidelined since the Six Nations tournament earlier in February but despite that he was included in the World Cup squad with a hope he will be playing some part in the showpiece event.

However, a statement released by the Welsh Rugby Union confirmed that Hill will head to his province to continue his rehabilitation.

Ospreys second row Bradley Davies has been named as the replacement for Hill and is expected to link up with the squad in Japan on Wednesday.

Davies has played 65 Tests for Wales since his debut in 2009 and represented Wales during the 2011 and 2015 World Cup campaigns during which he played 10 Tests combined.

Following their 14-43 win over Georgia, Wales will lock horns with Australia, Fiji and Uruguay in the remainder of the tournament.
