Stade Toulousain 59-26 Bristol Bears, Stadium de Toulouse

Bristol Bears exited the Investec Champions Cup at the round of 16 stage after a 59-26 defeat to Toulouse, with the six-time champions proving too sharp and too clinical on home soil.

Bristol did score four tries and showed character throughout, but Toulouse’s relentless finishing and repeated bursts of attacking quality, especially in the first half, settled the contest and sent the French side into the quarter-finals.

The Bears actually made the stronger opening and struck first through captain Fitz Harding, who finished from close range under the posts after a flowing move. That early score briefly gave Bristol hope, but Toulouse responded with ruthless accuracy and quickly took control of the contest.

Toulouse Turn The Match Around Before Halftime

After falling behind, Toulouse hit back through Jack Willis and then began to pile on the pressure. Peato Mauvaka crossed twice as the home side repeatedly found gaps in the Bristol defence, while Kalvin Gourgues also got over as Toulouse’s attack gathered pace.

Matthis Lebel then added another try before the break as Bristol struggled to slow the tempo or regain field position. By halftime, Toulouse had built a huge 40-7 lead and left the Bears facing a mountain to climb in the second half.

Lebel Adds Another After The Restart

Any hopes of a Bristol fightback were damaged almost immediately after halftime when Lebel crossed for his second try of the match. It was another blow for the visitors and reinforced Toulouse’s grip on the game.

Bristol did respond through Kalaveti Ravouvou on 47 minutes, giving the Bears something to build on. In the buildup, Romain Ntamack was shown a yellow card for a shoulder-to-head tackle on Benhard Janse van Rensburg, who was forced to leave the field with a facial injury.

Thomas Double Keeps Toulouse In Command

Even with a man down for a period, Toulouse remained dangerous and clinical. Teddy Thomas crossed twice in the second half as the hosts continued to punish Bristol whenever space opened up.

The try order was important in shaping the match. Bristol scored first through Harding, but Toulouse then ran through their key scorers in sequence with Willis, Mauvaka twice, Gourgues, Lebel, then Lebel again after the break, before Thomas added two more in the second half.

Bristol Finish With Late Tries

To their credit, Bristol kept going and finished the match with some attacking spark. James Williams intercepted in midfield and raced around 80 metres to score, before Noah Heward added another late try after running on to a perfectly timed pass from Williams.

Those late scores gave the Bears some reward for their persistence, but they could not alter the overall story of the match. Toulouse were faster, more precise and far more efficient with ball in hand, and they fully deserved their 59-26 victory and a place in the last eight.
