Tommy Freeman extends Northampton Saints deal

Tommy Freeman has signed a contract extension with Northampton Saints, committing his future to the PREM champions despite still having a season remaining on his previous deal.

The 25-year-old has made 118 appearances for Saints and scored 79 tries since progressing through the club’s Academy system.

Northampton did not disclose the length of the extension in its announcement, saying Freeman will remain at Franklin’s Gardens for the foreseeable future.

Freeman said the club’s environment, coaching staff, close-knit squad and supporters were major factors behind his decision to extend his stay.

“Saints is a special place,” said Freeman to the club's official website.

“We’ve got an incredible group of lads, a brilliant coaching set-up, and it’s the environment where I believe I can keep developing and get the best out of myself as a player.

“It’s a Club where you can be yourself. You’re encouraged to express your personality both on and off the field, and there’s a real sense that this group still has plenty more to achieve".

The versatile back has helped Northampton win two PREM titles in three seasons, scoring in both finals. He scored Northampton's opening try against Bath in the 2024 final and opened the match scoring against the Exeter Chiefs in 2026.

England and Lions success for Freeman

Freeman made his England debut during the 2022 tour of Australia and has since earned 30 Test caps. He has started every England match across the last three Six Nations campaigns.

In 2025, Freeman became the first English player to score a try in every round of a Six Nations Championship before being selected for the British & Irish Lions tour later that year.

He made six appearances during the Lions’ 2025 tour of Australia and started all three Tests against the Wallabies, having scored twice against Queensland Reds earlier in the tour.

Phil Dowson welcomes Freeman contract extension

Northampton Director of Rugby Phil Dowson described Freeman’s early commitment as a major boost to the club’s recruitment and retention plans.

“To have Tommy commit his future to the Club so early in this season’s recruitment and retention cycle is a huge boost for us. We’re delighted that he’s chosen to continue his journey with Northampton Saints," said Dowson.

“Tommy is an exceptional player and undoubtedly one of the best back-three players in the world. The fact he has also performed at outside centre at international level speaks volumes about both his quality and versatility.”

Freeman said Saints still have more to achieve after winning two domestic titles and reaching the 2025 European Champions Cup final, adding that he believes the squad can continue developing together.

“We’ve won two PREM titles, reached a European final, and we don’t think we’re finished yet. There are some exciting players coming into the group, and this is a squad that will only continue to grow with more experience and time together".
